North London divide: Cristian Romero open to Arsenal move, Tottenham remain firm

Romero’s Potential Move to Arsenal
Cristian Romero, a defender for Tottenham, is reportedly open to a transfer to Arsenal this summer. However, Tottenham has maintained a firm stance that their player will not move across the north London divide. This development comes amid ongoing transfer speculation involving the Argentine international.
The interest from Arsenal is part of a broader transfer window activity for the club, which is also reportedly looking at Juventus winger Kenan Yildiz. This follows an unsuccessful attempt by Arsenal to sign Vinicius Junior to the Premier League.
Interest from Other European Clubs
Beyond Arsenal, Romero has garnered significant attention from other major European clubs. Barcelona has re-entered the race for the defender, with his name reportedly moving to the forefront of their interests. This renewed pursuit by Barcelona follows the departure of their Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo, who has moved to Liverpool on a season-long loan with a purchase option.
According to reports, Barcelona has long admired Romero, noting his physical strength, leadership qualities, and ability to defend high up the pitch while performing under pressure. These attributes align with the qualities the club’s management seeks in a defender. While Romero was previously on Barcelona’s shortlist, Araujo’s exit has prompted sporting director Deco to consider a genuine deal for the Tottenham player.
Romero, who is 28, appears willing to leave Tottenham, and the English club has shown a willingness to consider offers for his services. Prior to Barcelona’s strong re-entry, Inter Milan had also shown significant interest in the Argentine defender, with their sporting director Piero Ausilio publicly acknowledging the club’s attempts to reach an agreement.
However, Barcelona is not the only club competing for Romero’s signature. Atletico Madrid has emerged as a prominent competitor. The Madrid-based club has tracked Romero for an extended period and renewed their interest in the current transfer window. Previous attempts by Atletico Madrid to sign Romero reportedly fell through due to Tottenham’s financial demands. Recent weeks have seen progress, particularly in Atletico’s contact with the player, with reports suggesting direct talks with Tottenham after an initial understanding on personal terms with Romero.
The strong entry of Barcelona into the transfer discussions could significantly alter the landscape, especially given that Atletico Madrid had appeared close to securing the move at one point. Barcelona believes that Romero would bring elite experience, a strong leadership personality, and a robust playing style, potentially making him an ideal partner for young talents in their defensive line, such as Pau Cubarsi.
Financial Considerations and Other Defensive Targets
Finances remain a primary hurdle in any potential transfer for Romero. This financial aspect is why Barcelona had previously considered a loan deal over an expensive permanent transfer. Despite the focus on Romero, Barcelona is also exploring other defensive options to strengthen their backline. Among these is Spanish defender Aymeric Laporte, who offers a different profile as a left-footed player, an advantage valued by the coaching staff.
Laporte, who returned to Athletic Bilbao last summer from Al-Nassr, has a contract running until 2028. His performance at the World Cup, where he formed a defensive partnership with Cubarsi, has further piqued Barcelona’s interest.
Internally, there appears to be some hesitation regarding the need for a new defender. Barcelona’s German coach Hansi Flick is reportedly hesitant about signing a new defender, preferring to trust the young players and existing solutions within the squad. Cubarsi is a leading figure in the defensive plans, alongside other options like Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen, Gerard Martin, and Alvaro Cortes, who can all fill the centre-back role.
However, Araujo’s departure has pushed Barcelona back into the market, as his exit frees up salary space, with Liverpool covering his entire wage. This situation means Cristian Romero’s name has once again risen on Barcelona’s shortlist, and their strong involvement could shift the balance in the competition with Atletico Madrid.

Tottenham boss Roberto de Zerbi recently stated that he would respect the wishes of players who desire to leave the club. Romero signed a new four-year deal with Spurs in August of the previous year. He missed the end of last season due to a knee injury, a season in which Spurs finished 17th and avoided relegation on the final day. During that season, Romero received two red cards.
