Bruno Guimaraes: Midfielder can help Arsenal reach next level, says Mikel Arteta

Guimaraes joins Arsenal

Arsenal has officially announced the signing of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United for £75 million. The 28-year-old midfielder was introduced to fans at Emirates Stadium before Sunday’s match against Borussia Dortmund. Manager Mikel Arteta expressed his delight, stating that Guimaraes’ arrival will “ignite something different” in the team and help push the club to the next level.

Guimaraes was not part of the matchday squad for the 3-2 loss to Dortmund but is likely to be involved in the game against Como on Wednesday. Arteta highlighted the Brazilian’s qualities, describing him as a “warrior with a tremendous quality as well and intuition and leadership and charisma.” He emphasised the player’s hunger and desire to create history at the club, aligning with Arsenal’s ambition to reach a higher standard.

The acquisition of Guimaraes provides Arteta with numerous options in midfield, including Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Martin Zubimendi, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri, and Eberechi. Arteta detailed Guimaraes’ versatility, noting his ability to play in two different positions, his intuition to win the ball back, and his capacity to progress play quickly. He also mentioned Guimaraes’ goal threat and timing in the box.

Transfer market activity and squad outlook

The transfer of Guimaraes concludes one of the summer’s longer-running sagas. Arsenal had previously had the opportunity to sign the midfielder from Lyon in January 2022, but Arteta had decided against the move at that time. However, his admiration for Guimaraes grew over the years, particularly after watching him perform for Newcastle.

Arsenal entered the current transfer window with central midfield as a clear priority. They aimed to bring in an established player to immediately improve the team. While they were interested in Guimaraes’ former Newcastle teammate Sandro Tonali, the cost of a potential deal was a deterrent. Tonali eventually joined Tottenham Hotspur in a deal.

With Tonali out of reach, Guimaraes became the preferred target to strengthen the midfield. Arteta and Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta view Guimaraes as a complete midfielder capable of playing as a No 6 or No 8, which allows for various combinations in the centre of the pitch. His passing ability is also expected to enhance Arsenal’s attacking play.

Guimaraes, who will be in November, is slightly outside Arsenal’s typical recruitment age range. However, the club values his experience and leadership qualities. Arsenal has already sold Leandro Trossard and Christian Norgaard this summer, and Gabriel Jesus is also available for transfer. The club believes that adding an experienced player like Guimaraes is necessary for the Premier League champions to continue winning.

Newcastle had initially not wanted to sell Guimaraes, viewing him as a crucial player for the team and the community. However, Arsenal had no difficulty agreeing to personal terms with the player, who expressed a strong desire to join the club. The deal between the two clubs was more challenging to finalise, with Newcastle insisting on a significant fee.

Intermediary Kia Joorabchian handled much of the day-to-day negotiations. Newcastle’s then head coach Eddie Howe had been pessimistic about retaining the player once reports of Arsenal’s interest emerged. Howe understood Guimaraes’ desire to join Arsenal and recognised that Newcastle could not financially compete with Europe’s largest clubs. The £75 million fee is a straight payment, with no add-ons.

Other transfers and team news

Beyond Guimaraes, Arsenal has also completed the signing of Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge and brought in goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer. Tzolis has shown strong form during pre-season, contributing three goal involvements in as many games. Arteta praised Tzolis’ fitness, confidence, sharpness, and work rate.

The Gunners had also pursued Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr, but the forward signed a new six-year deal to remain in Spain. Despite this, Arteta indicated that Arsenal will continue to be ambitious in the transfer market, seeking the right players to improve the squad further.

Regarding injuries, Jurrien Timber is still “weeks away” from returning to fitness, and William Saliba remains a long-term absentee due to a back injury. All World Cup internationals are expected to return to training tomorrow.

Arteta acknowledged the challenges of managing player loads ahead of the upcoming match against Como on Wednesday, followed by the Community Shield and the start of the Premier League season.
